KEGS goes hardrock

The Canadian Exploration Geophysical Society (KEGS) will host a short course on hardrock seismics on March 9, during the week of the annual convention of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada.

The course will be held at the Ontario room in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Toronto.

The morning session will cover survey design, field operations and contracting, whereas the afternoon will focus on borehole seismic studies, exploration case histories and geotechnical applications.

The price for those registering before March 1 is $300 for KEGS members and $350 for non-members. Add $100 for registration after March 1. Space is limited.

SRK hosts magnetics workshop

The Toronto branch of SRK Consulting will present a workshop on targeting from magnetics. The event is slated for March 9-10 at the Sheraton Convention Centre in Toronto.

Two of the world’s leading geoscientists, Peter Williams and David Pratt, will provide instruction on targeting under cover, geophysical surveys, and magnetics and gravity.

The workshop is limited to 50 participants, who are required to bring laptop computers.

Expomin to see ‘Brand Canada’

The bi-annual Expomin trade show will be held May 7-11 in Santiago, Chile.

In 2000, about 43,000 visitors and 2,300 exhibitors participated in the event, and comparable numbers are expected this year.

Meanwhile, the Canadian government has announced a grant of $165,000 to be assist Canadian activities relating to Expomin and other international trade shows. The goal is to promote Canada’s reputation as a source of mining-related products and services.

The Canadian Pavilion at Expomin will be managed by the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export (CAMESE).

Field trip in southern BC

The British Columbia and Yukon Chamber of Mines, in partnership with the province’s Institute of Technology, will offer an 8-day field course on exploration and prospecting methods in the Oliver area.

Slated for May 11-19, the course will focus on field-related skills such as identification of rocks and minerals, basic orienteering, claim-staking, grid establishment, sampling techniques (rock, soil, silt), geochemistry and geophysics.

Students will complete daily field exercises and interpret the results of exploration data.

The course was developed in co-operation with the province’s Ministry and Energy and Mines and is partly sponsored by the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia.

The cost is $650, which includes instruction, food, accommodation and transportation from Oliver. The cost is tax-deductible.
