Knut Kuhner

Prospector Knut Kuhner, who discovered the platinum group metals (PGM) deposit that later became the Lac Des les palladium mine, has died. He was 73.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Kuhner came to Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay), Ont., in 1953. He joined road construction crew and later served as a deck hand with several shipping companies.

A prospector by trade, he wandered into the woods surrounding Thunder Bay where he staked and claimed the property that became Lac Des les. He later discovered what became known as the Kuhner Occurrence, near Tib Lake, 15 km northwest of Lac Des les. Subsequent drilling intersected 69 ft. of PGM mineralization and eventually led to drilling by Houston Lake Mining.

Kuhner is survived by his sister, Kastinka Dorrance, and a niece.

Born in Winnipeg, Man., in 1949, James graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1972 with a master of science degree, majoring in geology.

He worked with several mining companies, including Hudson Bay Oil & Gas, before becoming an analyst with a brokerage firm in Toronto.

He joined Richardson Securities in the mid-1970s and survived several mergers until he moved to Canaccord Capital in the mid-1990s.

James was among the first analysts to realize the significance of diamond exploration in Canada’s far north.

He is survived by his partner, Judy Battershill, two daughters, Monique and Michelle, and their mother, Yvette Beaudry.
