Equal partners LAC Minerals (TSE) and Cambior (TSE) recently discovered gold-bearing sulphide mineralization on claims east of the Doyon gold mine near Cadillac, Que.
A surface drilling program operated by LAC intersected the mineralized zone in two drill holes on the Westwood property at a depth of about 2,300 ft. below surface.
According to LAC, the first hole (1019-90) intersected 20ft. of sulphide mineralization grading 0.12 oz. gold per ton, 2.25 oz. silver, 6.7% zinc, 0.6% lead and 0.4% copper.
This intercept included 10ft. of massive sulphide core grading 0.15 oz. gold, 3.03 oz. silver, 11.5% zinc, 0.9% lead, and 0.5% copper.
About 200 ft. higher up, a second hole wedged off 1019-90 intersected 28 ft. of massive sulphides grading 0.11 oz. gold, 1.17 oz. silver, 2.2% zinc, 0.4% lead and 0.3% copper. It included 2 ft. of grade 0.39 gold, 4.23 oz. silver, 14% zinc and 2.1% lead and 0.1% copper.
The Westwood claims are 5,400 ft. east of the Doyon mine which last year produced 256,842 oz. of the yellow metal at a cost of US$220 per oz. The mine is owned jointly by Cambior and LAC.
The discovery is closest to the Doyon mine’s Main zone which trends east-west for 2,950 ft. and has a width of up to 130 ft., dipping 60 to the south.
While LAC spokesman John Pearson wasn’t available when the Northern Miner attempted to reach him recently, Main zone gold mineralization is associated with concentrations of pyrite, quartz, chalcopyrite and visible gold.
Robert La Valliere, public relations manager for Cambior, says the Westwood assays prove once again the old adage that a producing mining camp is always a good hunting ground for new discoveries.
Other mines in the area include Agnico-Eagle Mines’ (TSE) Dumagami mine and LAC’s Bousquet 1 & 2 mines.
The new discovery is not too far from the Doyon underground workings which extend down to the 820-ft. level. “But it would take a lot of development to reach the Westwood intersection,” said La Valliere.
Meanwhile, as surface drilling continues at Westwood, LAC says it will test the Westwood zone about 1,000 ft. below hole 1019-90.
