Friends, both old and new, are being sought to help Leaf Rapids, Man., celebrate the town’s 25th anniversary.
Situated 3 km south of the Churchill River on the Canadian Shield and 976 km northwest of Winnipeg, Leaf Rapids will hold its celebrations from June 28 to July 1.
The town, a famous mining community, was established in 1970 when Sherritt Gordon Mines decided to open a copper mine at its Ruttan Lake property 25 km east of the townsite.
Development of the town was unusual in that design and construction was managed by a provincial Crown corporation, instead of the mining company. The townsite is also distinctive because its central complex contains stores, schools, offices, an arena, a curling rink and a hospital — all under one roof.
The Leaf Rapids Winter Carnival, held every March, features sled dog and snowmobile races.
