Learning labs for students

All of the Sudbury Board of Education’s grade 8 students will have a chance to gain first-hand knowledge about career opportunities in the field of engineering and technology this spring.

The Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has provided a grant of $19,000 to allow more than 1,000 students to participate in Laurentian University’s engineering awareness program.

Throughout the program, to commence April 27 at the university’s school of engineering, a different group of grade 8 students will spend one day participating in a series of labs that will offer an overview of engineering, career opportunities and the types of skills required by engineers. Presenting the labs will be male and female engineering school students. The program was first offered in 1989. The grade 8 students will participate in eight labs covering topics such as mine ventilation, rock mechanics and computer-aided design.
