LETTERS Large Zinc Deposit

It was interesting reading the letter in the August, 1987, issue from Kelvin Pankiw concerning large zinc deposits. I should like to draw your attention to the Howard’s Pass deposit near the Yukon-Northwest Territories boundary. Figures published by Placer Development a number of years ago indicated a total geological resource of 476 million tonnes at 7% combined lead and zinc. Assuming a lead-to- zinc ratio of 1:1, this would give about 16.7 million tonnes, or about 18.4 million short tons, of contained zinc. While these figures are obviously not very accurate, they certainly indicate that Howard’s Pass is up there with Red Dog and Brunswick when it comes to large zinc deposits.

Unfortunately, because of the remote location, lack of infrastructure and difficult metallurgy, it will probably be many years before this deposit becomes a mine. Roderic P. Hill, Chief Mining Development Officer, Energy & Mines Branch, Yukon Economic Development
