A recent lunch time conversation turned to the use of horses, mules and donkeys in underground mining. The Wabana mine in Newfoundland certainly used animals underground, and I personally observed horses underground at the gypsum mine at Caledonia in 1943-44.
Do any of the readers of The Northern Miner know where animals were last used underground in Canada? And do any readers know where today, if anywhere, animals are still employed in underground mines. W. J. Riddell, P.Eng. Willowdale, Ont.
