Today, the WNW Prospecting Syndicate, a venture funded by the Ontario Prospectors Assistance Program, began stripping overburden from a showing in the Geraldton, Ont., gold area. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) issued the permit to conduct this exploration work in six days and not the stated 6-8 weeks for such work conducted in a Nishanawbe-Aski Nation region. In addition, the showing, which was in the town of Geraldton watershed, required permission also of the Geraldton Suburban Planning Committee.
Why did this permitting process take only six working days? Co-operation.
The MNR allowed the prospecting group to expedite matters by directly approaching the concerned parties for permission. The WNW Prospecting Syndicate visited Chief William Magiskan of the Aeroland Reserve and the Geraldton Committee, outlined the proposed work and was given immediate permission to proceed. The MNR Geraldton office gave the permit prompt attention resulting in one happy prospecting group.
Perhaps Canada’s mining industry will be well on its way to recovery if every prospector, native or government encounter met with such co-operation. At least the Geraldton gold area appears to be open for business at this time. Allan Willy
