We have recently been informed that the federal department of Energy, Mines and Resources is planning to disband Peter Hood’s magnetic survey research group. As a company engaged in mineral exploration we do not have to point out the outstanding contributions that this part of em and r has made over the years to the better understanding of the geology and structure of many parts of Canada. As an example: without this group, gradiometer surveying would not yet have been developed.
We at the pdac are very concerned about this development and have written to Ottawa, to Dr P. O. Perron, associate deputy minister, em and r. We feel that every effort should be made to preserve this useful activity of em and r and urge everyone to make their views known to Dr Perron.
