The Mattabi mill and Lyon Lake underground mine, part of the Sturgeon Lake mining camp of northwestern Ontario, will close on May 22, reports Noranda Minerals, a unit of Noranda (TSE).
About 25 of the 240 workers at the copper-zinc operations will be kept on to oversee care and maintenance at the site.
During 1991, Noranda will have produced an estimated 3,900 tonnes of zinc and 270 tonnes of copper in concentrate by the closing date compared with 25,600 tonnes zinc and 2,100 tonnes copper in 1990.
Noranda said high operating costs, depressed metal prices and failure to locate new ore reserves at the site are the main reasons for the closure.
Discovered in 1969, the Mattabi mine operated until 1988 when the 13-million-ton polymetallic orebody was finally exhausted. Since then, the Mattabi mill has been processing ore from the Lyon Lake underground operation.
