The mining industry in Canada’s westernmost province may have little to cheer about, but the Mining Association of British Columbia put its best foot forward during its annual awards ceremony, held at the Hyatt Hotel as part of the province’s Mining Week.
The MABC named the province’s largest city as the Mining Community of the Year. Vancouver was chosen for its top-ranked companies, its capacity to attract investment dollars for the industry, and the spinoff sectors that owe their prosperity to the mining and exploration sector.
The MABC noted that the city is home to 850 mining companies; raises, through the Vancouver Stock Exchange, roughly a quarter of worldwide exploration capital; and is home to 40 suppliers, consulting firms and other service providers.
The Elkford Chamber of Commerce was named the Mining Supporter of the Year for its efforts in promoting the coal industry in the Elk Valley.
Named Mining Industry Person of the Year was Vin Coyne, manager of communications for Finning International, a heavy equipment supplier. Coyne was recognized for his role in supporting the community. He has served as chairman of both British Columbia Mining Week and the Mining, Suppliers, Contractors & Consultants Association of British Columbia.
About 200 people attended the awards, including mining and supplier executives, and politicians.
