The Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) has co-awarded Jim O’Rourke of Copper Mountain Mining (CUM-T) and Robert Pease of Terrane Metals as 2010’s “Mining Person of the Year.”
As Copper Mountain’s chief executive officer, O’Rourke has played a leading role in advancing the Copper Mountain copper project in southern B.C. toward production, which is expected this June.
The mining engineer rose above the difficulties imposed by the 2008 financial crisis by arranging a strategic alliance with Mitsubishi Materials to ensure project financing, allowing for the creation of 272 well-paying jobs for the community of Princeton.
Pease similarly led a B.C. mining project toward a production decision. Pease, a geologist and the former president of Terrane Metals, successfully obtained federal, provincial and local First Nation approvals to develop the Mt. Milligan copper-gold project in central B.C. He also helped orchestrate the friendly takeover of Terrane by Thompson Creek Metals (TCM-T, TC-N), which expects to have Mt. Milligan in production by 2013.
MABC praised both men for their contributions to the province, saying it is rare to be able to honour two remarkable individuals in the same year.
