Responding to a call on the mining industry from B.C. Premier William Vander Zalm to join a task force study group, the Mining Association of B.C. says it welcomes the suggestion.
Premier Vander Zalm and provincial mines minister Jack Davis said that the committee will be asked to examine a variety of mining industry-related issues such as tax policies, exploration financing, regional development policies and regulatory and environmental permitting procedures, in addition to several others.
“I look forward to hearing what can be done to encourage growth and job creation in the mining sector,” the Premier said. He also noted that the industry directly employs more than 21,000 people.
By mutual agreement, the task force will be co-chaired by Charles Aird, president of the B.C. and Yukon Chamber of Mines, Giacomo Capobianco, chairman of the Coal Association and A. J. Petrina, chairman of the Mining Association of B.C.
