Vladimir Mackiw, retired executive vice-president of Sherritt Gordon, was recently honored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) at its annual banquet. Mackiw was awarded the James A. Douglas Gold Medal for “leadership in helping to transform a mining company into a major producer of refined nickel, cobalt fertilizer and speciality metals and chemicals.”
Usually, Douglas Gold Medal winners are recognized for their exceptional achievements in fundamental research and process development.
Mackiw, who spent almost 40 years with Sherritt Gordon, started as a research chemist in 1948 and rose to executive vice-president in 1972.
