Maintenance shuts down smelter

For two weeks in April, Kennecott will shut down its new smelter at Bingham Canyon, Utah.

A replacement heat recovery system will be installed and repairs will be made to the acid plant. The company will also re-brick the flash converting furnace.

The smelter is not expected to be at full capacity until after September, when a shorter stoppage is planned.

Kennecott owner RTZ-CRA (NYSE) says the shutdowns will have a negligible impact on 1996 earnings.
