The pit measures 10 metres wide by 10 metres long and is 11 metres deep. It was recently excavated with explosives following the stripping of 3 metres of glacial and glacio-marine overburden. Sterile granite was removed and kimberlite rock from the sub-horizontal sill was extracted.
An aggregate of 5-10 tonnes of kimberlite will be selected and stockpiled for shipment to the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) lab for diamond recovery processing. This kimberlite material will be separated into two samples: one will consist of coarse-grained megacryst-rich kimberlite, which accounts for a quarter of the sill’s volume; the other will consist of run-of-mill kimberlite. Each sample will be individually processed for plus 0.85 mm diamonds.
In addition, at least 100 kg of the kimberlite will be submitted for microdiamond extraction via caustic fusion analysis at the same laboratory. Recovery and analysis of indicator minerals will be performed at the SRC.
Meanwhile, at the Portage diamond project, also in Quebec, operator BHP Billiton Diamonds has advised Majescor that a geophysical contractor is carrying out an airborne geophysical survey. Till sampling will begin once data from the geophysical survey have been analyzed. BHP is funding exploration at the Portage property and has the right to earn up to 56% interest in the property by taking the project through to production.
