The Mines Accident Prevention Association Ontario has presented its first Awards of Excellence for outstanding safety achievements in four sectors of the province’s mining industry — underground mines, open pit mines, mine contractors and diamond drill contractors.
The Awards of Excellence, given to the company in each category with the lowest medical injury frequency of the group, went to Hemlo Gold Mines – Golden Giant mine, (underground), frequency 11.5; McBean mine, (open pit) frequency 7.4; Patrick Harrison & Co, (mine contractors), frequency 17.8, and Midwest Diamond Drilling, (diamond drill contractors), frequency 13.2. The MAPAO has also established Awards of Honour, to be given to companies h aving a frequency that is at least 50% lower than the group average, but says no such awards were presented for 1986, the awards program’s first official competition period.
Midwest Diamond Drilling was the only firm eligible for an Award of Honour, but the Association says the awards criteria don’t permit a company to receive two awards in any one competition year.
