McClean Lake wins environmental status

Cogema Resources’ 70%-owned McClean Lake mine in Saskatoon is the first uranium producer in Canada to receive environmental management certification.

The operation achieved its new status by adhering to an international set of standards for maintaining an environmental management system. The standards are voluntary and are recognized in more than 90 countries.

“McClean Lake is leading the industry in environmental responsibility,” says Cogema President Arnaud de Bourayne.

Situated 750 km north of Saskatoon, the deposit was discovered in 1979 and began production in June 1999. Its uranium mill is the first in North America to have been granted a licence in the past 15 years.

Cogema’s partners in the operation are Denison Mines, with a 22.5% interest, and OURD, a consortium of Japanese companies, with 7.5%.

Cogema operates mining facilities at Cluff Lake, is the operator and majority-owner of the Midwest uranium projects, and is part-owner of three other uranium projects: Cigar Lake (37% interest), McArthur River (31%) and Key Lake (16.6%). All these operations are in Saskatchewan.
