Miners will be marching on Washington, D.C., next month in response to predictions that there will be Congressional mining law activity.
The trips are being co-ordinated with the Mineral Resources Alliance, a coalition of companies and organizations spearheading the effort to negotiate responsible mining law reform.
“Weekly visits to Congress is a technique used by our opponents,” said Steven Craig, exploration manager with Kennecott Exploration in Reno. “We will orchestrate weekly meetings with key members of the House Natural Resources Committee and potential Conference Committee members.”
Craig said companies involved in mining will be asked to participate and lend financial support. He underscored the need for widespread industry participation.
“This is the final battle,” Craig said. “We won’t get another chance. We simply have to play to win by keeping the pressure on Congress with a series of trips.”
All members of the industry are asked to participate — miners, geologists, engineers, equipment operators, administrative staff, and companies which supply goods and services to the industry.
Organizers hope to schedule weekly trips.
