The Limon gold mine in Nicaragua has been shut down following the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch.
The suspension is expected to last two weeks as owner Black Hawk Mining (BHK-T) cleans up damage caused by heavy rainfall and winds. The site is without electricity and one of the open pits experienced “significant flooding,” according to company reports. Roads surrounding the mine have been washed out, making delivery of supplies difficult.
Nicaragua is one of the Central American countries hardest hit by the hurricane, which killed more than 1,300 there.
