Mining vacancies

Job vacancies for engineers, accountants, scientists and other professionals increased 8% during the last three months, but decreased 11% during the last year, according to a Technical Service Council survey.

The Council says its quarterly survey of employers showed the 12-month decrease was largely due to hiring freezes in Alberta, where vacancies slumped 46% during the year because of the plunge in oil prices.

The survey, it adds, reflects vacancies in mining, construction, manufacturing, consulting and service organizations, but not in governments and institutions.

Not surprisingly, it notes an over- supply of experienced petroleum geologists, geophysicists and petroleum engineers.
