Mining Week deferred in N.W.T.

A strike at the Giant gold mine of Royal Oak Mines at Yellowknife, N.W.T., has led to a suspension of Mining Week activities in the Northwest Territories.

Activities were planned for June 15-20. “The (organizing) committee feels that since N.W.T. Mining Week is designed to celebrate the northern mining industry and those that work in it, now would not be an opportune time to hold the event,” said committee Chairman Tom Hoefer.

He said the committee is hopeful that once the strike is settled, there will be enough time later this summer to stage the event.
