MNDM reorganizes

“The new structure will help the branch to fulfil its mandate and enhance service to the ministry’s clients,” said branch director John Gammon.

The branch now comprises four sections: mining lands; mineral development; policy and planning; information and statistics. In addition, a new position of chief research analyst has been established.

The mining lands section will provide leadership and co-ordination for the provincial mining lands program. This program is delivered through the division’s field organization and ensures public access to Crown mineral rights through policies and legislation pertaining to the acquisition, co-ordination and disposition of mineral rights, and by maintaining a competitive mineral exploration and development land base. The mining lands section also attempts to minimize adverse effects of exploration activity on the natural environment.

The mineral development section, in cooperation with the field organization, seeks and develops new opportunities and market niches, co-ordinates the province’s financial aid to the mining industry and advises government and industry about legislation, market trends and technological advances.

The branch’s policy and planning section will identify mineral- related issues and trends and examine policy alternatives.

The information and statistics section will focus on methods of collection meaningful and complete statistical data on exploration and mining development. This component will emphasize metallic minerals and the traditional industrial minerals sector.

Chief research analyst Dr Gerry Anders will concentrate his efforts on long-term research with significant policy implication for the Mines and Division.
