The estimate by Pearson, Hofman & Associates (PHA) also included: verification drilling and trenching; re-surveying of all holes, trenches and adits; revised interpretations of all mineralized zones; and a study of the assay database.
Using a cutoff grade of 3 grams gold per tonne, PHA estimates the indicated primary resource to be 2 million tonnes grading 6.15 grams (cut), or 401,000 contained ounces, unchanged from last year. However, the estimated oxide resource climbed to 900,000 tonnes of 2.95 grams (cut), or 84,000 contained ounces, up from 42,000 contained ounces in 1997. The cutoff for oxides is 0.5 gram gold.
Primary inferred resources were reduced slightly to 1.5 million tonnes of 6 grams, or 282,000 contained ounces, down from 353,000 contained ounces reported last year. Nevsun says the changes in inferred tonnage were the result of changed resource outlines and some upgrades to the indicated category.
PHA personnel were directly involved in the verification of sampling and assaying to establish quality control. Analytical Solutions carried out re-sampling,
re-assaying and check assaying work, while Lakefield Research undertook metallurgical tests
that indicated recoveries of more than 90%.
Nevsun notes that the Kubi project is well-suited to heap-leaching, with recoveries of more than 80% anticipated from oxide material.
