New GQ zones surrender micros

Band-Ore Resources (BAN-T) has recovered 2 microdiamonds from one of three 10-kg samples derived from a new 40-metre-long breccia zone along the west shore of the Magpie River on the GQ property 15 km north of Wawa, Ont. The two remaining samples came up empty.

The company also recovered 11 micros (stones with no dimensions greater than 0.5 mm) from a till sampling program completed late last year. The program was designed to investigate the effectiveness of till sampling on the property.

This summer, geological mapping and prospecting at GQ turned up 11 new areas of heterolithic breccia. Mechanical stripping and channel sampling have begun on six of the zones.

The GQ property is home to hundreds of showings of heterolithic breccia containing diamonds. Chief among them is the Engagement zone, which has surrendered more than 12,000 micros and 340 macrodiamonds in 406 kg of sample taken at various spots along its 335-metre length. The zone has an implied grade of 4.8 carats per 100 tonnes.

The latest round of work at GQ was funded by Kennecott Canada Exploration, the Canadian exploration division of Rio Tinto (RTP-N). Kennecott can earn a 70% stake in the 53-sq.-km property by spending $15 million on exploration over seven years. Since October, Kennecott has spent more than $617,000. Kennecott also retains the right to market all GQ diamonds on behalf of the joint venture.

Band-Ore originally acquired the GQ property in early 2000 after a diamond-bearing find made by local prospectors Terry Nicholson, Michael Tremblay and Jack Robert along a new logging road. The purchase price was $1.2 million, payable over three years, plus 2 million shares.
