Drilling has expanded the size of the mineralized zone at the LaRonde mine, 55 km west of Val d’Or, Que., and owner Agnico-Eagle Mines (TSE) is optimistic about increasing the reserves.
Drill holes advanced from an exploration drift at the mine extended the size of the mine’s 20 North zone eastward and 300 ft. below the level of the drift. Results indicate that the mineralization becomes richer in copper and gold, and poorer in silver and zinc, toward the east.
In a cluster of holes drilled in the 20 North zone, one intersected 6.6 ft. grading 0.68% zinc and 1.21% copper, as well as 0.08 oz. gold and 2.4 oz. silver per ton. Another cut 14.8 ft. of 0.34% zinc, 0.97% copper, 0.18 oz. gold and 1.49 oz. silver, and a third cut 8.9 ft. of 1.26% zinc, 1.13% copper, 0.13 oz. gold and 11.8 oz. silver.
In the 20 South zone, definition drilling encountered more mineralization, including one intersection of 7.5 ft. grading 3.87% zinc, 0.28% copper, 0.49 oz. gold and 2.88 oz. silver, and another, also 7.5 ft. long, grading 5.04% zinc, 0.43% copper, 0.33 oz. gold and 2.25 oz. silver.
Increased productivity and lower operating costs at the mine generated revenue of $66.5 million and earnings of $16.9 million for the company in the first nine months of 1995. During the same period in 1994, Agnico-Eagle earned $11.6 million on revenue of $59 million.
