I read with interest Isabella Wai’s article “Peter Holmes advances Chutine in Mexico” (T.N.M., July 8/91) until I reached the last line. Holmes’ statement that “no environmental hearing is required” in Mexico is, in my view, irresponsible.

Statements and attitudes such as this are the reason the mining industry has such a bad reputation with the general public. It is also one of the reasons our industry is finding it necessary to move outside of Canada. Just watch, in 10 or 20 years when Mexico has achieved living standards similar to what we have in Canada, you will see the same complaints that mining is being driven out of the country. The cry will be onerous environmental restrictions, and why, because of short-sighted, sloppy mining practices.

We have passed the time when environmental consciousness can be ignored, no matter where in the world your company operates. Our industry can and must adapt to reasonable environmental standards.

If we wish to have support for the development of reasonable environmental controls, we must establish and maintain credibility wherever we work. Alf Randall
