Production at the Shebandowan nickel mine near Thunder Bay, Ont., will be suspended for a minimum of three months effective May 15, Inco (TSE) reports.
The decision will affect 360 contract workers at the mine, which was closed previously in the mid-1980s and re-opened in 1989.
In addition, the company, whose major Canadian nickel-mining operations are at Sudbury, Ont., and Thompson, Man., said the scheduled 4-week vacation shutdown this year at all Ontario division mines will be extended to five weeks.
Inco expects its Canadian mine output of nickel will drop by about 10 million lb. this year because of these actions.
