NEWS ROUNDUP — EPA fines Cyprus for discharge

A subsidiary of Cyprus Amax Minerals (CYM-N) will pay a fine of US$760,000 for having discharged contaminated water from the Bagdad copper mine in central Arizona.

Cyprus Bagdad Copper will pay US$285,000 to the state of Arizona and US$475,000 at the federal level. David Schmidt of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the discharges occurred between January 1990 and August 1993, and have since been rectified.
