NEWS ROUNDUP — Matachewan spill sentence postponed

Sentencing of those held responsible for a 1990 tailings spill near Elk Lake, Ont., has been postponed until the autumn.

In July, Matachewan Consolidated Mines (TSE), its president Richard McCloskey and Goldteck Mines (TSE) were all convicted in connection with a spill from the old Matachewan gold mine.

Sentencing was scheduled for Aug. 20, but had to be postponed after the defence used up all the available court time to present its summations. A second court date will be chosen on Sept. 8.

Matachewan and Goldteck each faces a maximum fine of $700,000. McCloskey can be charged up to $10,000.
