Noranda closes Brunswick

Noranda’s Brunswick mine, in the Bathurst area of New Brunswick, has been shut down following the collapse of part of the conveyor system that hauls ore from underground to the surface.

Originally, the company said the operation would remain closed for at least a month for repairs; it now says “temporary solutions” may allow it to reopen sooner.

The mine, a producer of zinc, lead and silver, is the second Canadian operation to be temporarily closed by Noranda this year. In February, the company suspended operations at the Bell Allard base metal mine, in northwestern Quebec, to repair a damaged shaft.
