Noranda convicted in mine fatality

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for May 31 to deal with the conviction of Noranda Minerals on three violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The conviction stems from a 1991 fatality at the Geco mine in Manitouwadge.

Noranda Minerals, a unit of Noranda (TSE), faces fines of up to $500,000 on each charge related to the death of John Poster, who suffered head injuries when he was struck by a falling rock while riding a cage with his partner down a small connecting shaft to another drift.

Justice of the peace Gordon Buterin convicted the company for: failing to prevent a cage from being used without a valid permit; failing to ensure that a supervisor check a drilling and blasting area for its safety during each work shift; and failing to ensure that a connecting shaft was made safe by scaling, timbering, rock-bolting or other measures.
