Noranda hits zinc near Timmins

The exploration division of Noranda (TSE) has encountered additional base metal mineralization at the Fox-Stimson property near Timmins, Ont.

Property vendor Cross Lake Minerals (VSE) reports three holes were drilled to evaluate an intersection in Hole 93.2 that yielded anomalous zinc values over a 67-metre interval.

Hole PT93-4, drilled to a depth of 327.3 metres, intersected a 142-metre sequence of felsic tuffs with interbedded graphite from 163.3 to 305.1 metres. This sequence contained widespread, disseminated pyrite and sphalerite and within it, three discrete zinc-lead-copper zones were identified. Values range up to 3.8% zinc, 2.5% lead and 0.1% copper over 6.8 metres.

Hole PT93-6, drilled below Hole 93-4 at minus 70 to a depth of 467 metres, encountered an 81-metre felsic sequence from 293 to 374.1 metres. This sequence contained two zones of disseminated mineralization. The upper zone in the sequence yielded 1% zinc and 0.2% lead over 5 metres. The third hole, PT93-5, drilled 100 metres east of 93-2, intersected a diabase dyke at the point where the host stratigraphy was expected. Noranda, which has earned a 70% interest in the 23-claim property, is formulating a follow-up program of geophysics and drilling. A previous induced polarization survey suggests that the felsic horizon which hosts the base metal mineralization may extend for 1 km, and drilling has so far tested this zone in two locations 100 metres apart.
