Northern Miner to host 2nd Southeast Asian mining show

Southeast Asia continues to attract mining companies from around the world, and its already-proven deposits and potential will be the focus of the second annual Southeast Asian Mining Conference and Exhibition. The forum, to be hosted by The Northern Miner, will be held Sept. 25-26 at the Holiday Inn on King in downtown Toronto.

Sponsored by investment firms Lowen Ondaatje McCutcheon and Yorkton Securities, as well as IBK Capital and Barrick Gold, the conference will offer information both on the geology of the area and investment opportunities. All aspects of exploration and development in the region will be examined, from land acquisition to tax and royalty implementation.

Paul Kavanagh, a director of Bre-X Minerals, will present the keynote address. He will discuss exploration and development of the Busang gold deposit, which contains a gold resource estimated at more than 16 million oz.

In a separate presentation, a delegation from the China Gold Bureau will announce new regulatory changes affecting foreign companies in their country.

Lead by Chief Engineer Yang Dali, the delegation is expected to discuss newly drafted legislation that will significantly change the regulation of foreign investment in the exploration and development of gold projects there.

John Steele of Yorkton Securities will offer a survey of countries in Southeast Asia, shedding light on operational procedures, tax structures and the different systems of government.

Among the 42 exhibitors will be many junior companies active in the region.

The conference will also feature case studies on exploration programs carried out in Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. These studies will be presented by mining firms involved in the countries, including Indomin Resources, Yamana Resources, Asia Pacific Resources, TVI Pacific and Echo Bay Mines.
