Having signed a contract with an Ecuadorian joint-venture partner, Northfield Minerals (TSE) reports that mapping, sampling and trenching are under way at the Nambija Uno gold concession in the South American country.
A drill program will follow in June.
Elsewhere in Ecuador, work is continuing at the Macuchi copper-gold property. Results are expected shortly from trenching and drilling on the Mercedes-Esperanza target.
Both projects are relatively new for Northfield; the option agreements were signed in late 1995 and early 1996.
The company reports that two drills are testing exploration targets at the Minera Remance gold property in Panama.
Closer to home, Hemlo Gold Mines (TSE) is about to start a deep drilling program to test ground around, but not including, Northfield’s Cheminis gold mine near Virginiatown, Ont. The major can earn a 50% interest in this land package from Northfield.
Meanwhile, Northfield has signed a milling contract whereby Kinross Gold will process a 6,000-ton bulk sample from Cheminis at its Macassa mill in Kirkland Lake. Northfield recently carried out rehabilitation work at Cheminis, with a view to resuming operations.
