Nuinsco, Niocan pick up Quebec mining awar

The Quebec Prospectors Association recently handed out industry awards at its 25th annual meeting, held in Rouyn-Noranda, Que.

Douglas Hume, president of Nuinsco, and prospectors Pierre Gervais and Edouard Chartre were named Prospectors of the Year for their Lac Rocher copper-nickel discovery in northwestern Quebec’s Matagami region.

Niocan was named Developer of the Year for having advanced its niobium project near Oka, west of Montreal.

In other news, Chantal Patenaude, the association’s director-general, is stepping down. A replacement has yet to be announced.

On the other side of the country, six mining firms have been recognized for their reclamation efforts at former mining operations in British Columbia.

The hardware was distributed recently by the province’s mines ministry at a mine reclamation symposium in Kamloops. Winners included Afton Operating (annual mine reclamation award), Homestake Canada (special citation), Misty Mountain Gold (exploration), Gallery Resources (placer mining), Luscar (coal mining), and Highland Valley Copper (metal mining).
