OBITUARIES — John Gordon Strasser

John Gordon Strasser, president of Nugget Resources, has died. He was 70.

Strasser was born in Hamilton, Ont., in 1928. He obtained a diploma from the Provincial Institute of Mining in Haileybury, Ont., in 1946 and a degree in mining engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1949.

After graduating, Strasser worked for Inco’s Frood and Creighton mines in Sudbury, Ont. He spent the next 22 years at Inco mines near the city, including the Copper Cliff, Levack, Murray and Clarabella.

Strasser left the nickel giant in 1971 to become general manager at Campbell Chibougamau Mines. By 1985, he had attained the position of vice-president and chief executive officer of the company, now known as Campbell Resources. He also served as chief operating officer at Camchib Resources.

In the years that followed, he held similar positions at Meston Lake Resources, Goldlund Mines, Renabie Gold Mines and Cullation Lake Gold Mines.

Between 1971 and 1990, Strasser also dabbled in the consulting business. His clients included Chibougamau Mining & Smelting, Coal Corporation of America, Murgold Mines, Meston Lake and James Wade Engineering.

Strasser joined James Wade Engineering in 1986 and soon rose to the position of general manager.

Strasser’s career in senior management began in 1990 when he was appointed president and chief operating officer of Belmoral Mines. He remained with the company until 1994, when he became president and chief operating officer of Nugget Resources.

Beginning in 1978, Strasser served as director at several companies, including Yorbeau Resources, Murgold Resources, Wrightbar Mines. At the time of his death, he sat on the boards of VenCan Gold, Corner Bay Minerals, Beau Canada Exploration and Consolidated Thompson Lundmark, in addition to

being a director at Nugget.

Strasser was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers (Ontario), the Association of Engineers of Quebec, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.

Strasser is predeceased by wife Dorothy, and survived by wife Irene, sons Robert and James, and daughter Susan, as well as by stepchildren Cindy, Melissa, Numila and Amy.
