Born near Midland, Ont., Maurice graduated from Laval University in 1943 with a degree in mining engineering. Later he received a Ph.D. in economic geology at the University of Toronto. He worked in gold mines in Ontario and Quebec, as a mapping geologist for the Quebec department of mines and as a geophysicist for Mining Geophysics Corp., Dominion Gulf and Geo-Technical Development Co.
In 1973 he became director of the Geological Exploration Service, a post he held until 1983.
