Walter Baker, well-known prospector and resident of Larder Lake, Ont., died suddenly on March 2. He was 86. Baker began prospecting at an early age in the Bisset-Rice Lake gold camp of Manitoba and during his lengthy career became famous within the mining exploration community for his amazing record of mineral discoveries in various parts of the Canadian Shield, including early work in Ontario’s prolific Hemlo camp.
On his retirement in 1988 he received the Prospector of the Year award from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada in recognition of his long and dedicated work in mineral exploration.
