OBITURARY John MacIsaac

John MacIsaac, the man known to many as Canada’s pre-eminent mining contractor, died recently at his home in Sudbury, Ont., after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 84. The native of Butte, Mont., who successfully completed contract work for more than 30 major mining and power companies, died just hours after being inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

During a 65-year association with the mining industry, MacIsaac’s mining and tunnelling company sank shafts on 80 projects in Sudbury and Elliot Lake, Ont., and across Canada.

He also founded Baycar Steel Fabricating Ltd., one of the largest steel fabricating plants in northern Ontario, and Sudbury Downs Holdings, the only horse racing facility north of Barrie, Ont.

MacIsaac is survived by his wife, Sheila, and five children.
