Laurentian University’s department of science and engineering will receive a $9,750 provincial grant to study acid mine drainage, according to Ontario Mines Minister Gilles Pouliot. The university plans to carry out a laboratory study on the feasibility of using chemical techniques to separate and divert the pyrrhotite component of reactive mine tailings, thus preventing acid mine drainage.
“The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines is pleased to support this important work,” said Pouliot. “It could produce environmental benefits throughout northern Ontario.”
