Ontario conducts environmental tests

Prompted by concerns about environmental impact of previous disposal practices, Ontario’s Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has commissioned a geotechnical assessment of soil and groundwater near its Temiskaming Testing Laboratories in Cobalt, Ont.

The laboratories, for two decades after its establishment in 1942, had discarded slag and used fire assay cupels at locations adjacent to the building.

MNDM will use the test results, available early next year, to recommend remedial actions.

As well, the ministry has given Pickle Lake $80,000 to test potential hazards at the abandoned Central Patricia mine site.
