Ontario geologists seek to expand registration drive

More than 250 Ontario geologists have applied for membership in the Association of Geoscientists of Ontario (AGO), formed earlier this year to provide a framework for professional registration of geologists.

The association has its roots in the Committee for the Professional Registration of Geoscientists in Ontario (CPRGO), which was started in 1989 for the purpose of pressing for a system of professional registration similar to those in Alberta, British Columbia and Newfoundland.

Representatives of the CPRGO, together with members of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, are expected to present their proposals to the provincial government by year-end.

The 250 members of AGO make up almost 10% of the geoscientists currently working in the province.
