More than 550 delegates representing 55 countries attended the eighth symposium of the International Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits (IAGOD) here Aug. 12-18, the first time the event has been held in Canada. Highlights of the conference were the Core Shed and the field trip program. Drill core, plans and sections from such classic Canadian ore deposits as Kidd Creek, Sullivan, Polaris, Hemlo and the Sudbury basin were displayed. Well informed geologists were also on hand to provide descriptions.
Field trips covered most of the mineral districts of Canada from Newfoundland to the Yukon and focused on ore genesis and the relationship of the deposits to regional geology.
Although several presentations were cancelled, the technical program included more than 400 papers on research and deposits worldwide.
An entire session was devoted to the results of current research on the hydrothermal activity on the Juan de Fuca and Gorda Ridges with the latest information on fluid chemistry and ore precipitation mechanisms involved in these active systems.
Apart from the technical program, the symposium was remarkable for the high degree of co-operation between industry, government and universities on both national and international levels.
