Others’ Words (August 03, 1992)

The name of the community of Copper Cliff in northern Ontario is allegedly derived from the expression “cliffs of copper,” with which Rinaldo McConnell described the mineral-rich area to Samuel J. Ritchie, the Ohio promoter who founded the Canadian Copper Co. The site of numerous mining and smelting operations, Copper Cliff was first settled in 1886, became a town April 15, 1901, and became part of the city of Sudbury in 1973.
