A total of 300 kg of sample derived from eight areas on Band-Ore Resources‘ (BAN-T) GQ diamond property, 15 km north of Wawa, Ont., is on its way to Kennecott Canada Exploration’s laboratory in Thunder Bay for microdiamond analysis.

The samples are part of 840 kg collected from 42 saw-cut channels on eight recently mechanically stripped areas. The new breccia targets were found during this summer’s program of geological mapping and prospecting at GQ.

In all, 2,800 sq. metres have been stripped exposing volcaniclastic heterolithic breccia similar to that found at the Engagement zone. Surface widths range from 3 to more than 50 metres. Save for one area, additional stripping is required to fully expose the breccias.

Also headed to Thunder Bay are three grab samples totalling 60 kg, and one 60-kg saw-cut channel sample. Those samples were collected from two separate outcrops of heterolithic breccia that have yet to be stripped.

Results are expected in 4-6 weeks.

Earlier this summer, Band-Ore recovered 2 microdiamonds from one of three 10-kg samples derived from a new 40-metre-long breccia zone along the west shore of the Magpie River on the property. The two remaining samples came up empty.

The company also recovered 11 micros (stones with no dimensions greater than 0.5 mm) from a till sampling program completed late last year. The program was designed to investigate the effectiveness of till sampling on the property.

The GQ property is home to hundreds of showings of heterolithic breccia containing diamonds. Chief among them is the Engagement zone, which has surrendered more than 12,000 micros and 340 macrodiamonds in 406 kg of sample taken at various spots along its 335-metre length. The zone has an implied grade of 4.8 carats per 100 tonnes.

Kennecott Canada Exploration, the Canadian exploration arm of Rio Tinto (RTP-N) can earn a 70% stake in the property by spending $15 million on exploration over seven years and by completing and financing all work on the property until a decision to mine has been made.
