Partners find kimberlite boulders

Vancouver — A prospecting and hand trenching program by Ashton Mining of Canada (ACA-T) has discovered numerous kimberlite boulders in till on the Star diamond property in Canada’s Northwest Territories.

The boulders are described as macrocystic, olivine-rich, hematitic hypabyssal kimberlite which measures up to 50 cm in diameter.

In order to identify the bedrock source of the boulders, limited ground geophysics and a detailed grid of till sampling have been completed. Ashton has collected some 100 kg of kimberlite float material, which has been sent for microdiamond analysis.

Lying 180 km southwest of the Ekati diamond mine, the property has been worked since 1995.

Previous till samples yielded encouraging indicator minerals, including a significant population of “G10” garnets.

Last year, two samples from a linear depression near the new discovery returned more than 10,000 indicator minerals. Measuring 350 metres by 60 metres, the depression runs parallel to the glacial ice transport direction and terminates in a lake at its up-ice end.

Ashton holds a 56% stake in the property, Tenajon Resources (TJS-V) has 20% and Pure Gold Minerals (PUG-T) holds 24%.
