Vancouver — Despite major political upheaval and the perpetration of a well-known gold scam there, explorers continue to be drawn to the geological potential of Indonesia.
According to an country’s news agency, Antara, PT Placer Dome Exploration Indonesia, a unit of Canadian gold mining company Placer Dome (PDG-T), is back exploring in south Kalimantan.
The major is reportedly working with two local joint-venture partners to explore the Meratus and Kusan regions on the Indonesian side of Borneo.
Placer made its debut in Indonesia in 1980, carrying out gold explorations in North Sulawesi. In 1997, the company got caught up in the frenzy generated by the now fabled Busang gold discovery in Kalimantan. In that year, Placer spent some $4 million there before it pulled out.
Most recently, the company briefly explored a section on the main island of Java.
