Drilling by Iamgold (IMG-T) at the Quimsacocha gold prospect in Azuay province, Ecuador, has encountered further wide intersections of gold mineralization.
The most recent drilling tested areas in the central D1 zone and in the area between D1 and Loma Larga to the south, which recent drilling showed to be a single mineralized structure. Iamgold drilled 12 holes on D1 and another eight on Loma Larga and the area between the two zones.
Between Loma Larga and the southern end of D1, one hole returned 59.3 metres grading 5.1 grams gold per tonne, with 30 grams silver and 0.3% copper, and another 67.5 metres grading 10.3 grams gold and 28.2 grams silver per tonne, plus 0.8% copper. A third ran 31.4 grams gold and 50.7 grams silver per tonne, plus 2.4% copper, over 22.3 metres.
Five other holes in the area all returned significant mineralization, with gold grades of 1.8 to 5.1 grams per tonne over core lengths of 10 to 118 metres. Most of the mineralization in the area is in flat to shallow-dipping zones of silicified volcanic rock, broken up by near-vertical faults.
Drill holes in the D1 zone itself intersected zones 10 to 50 metres thick, with average gold grades over the whole intersection ranging from 1 gram to 8 grams per tonne. The best intersection was a 50.4-metre zone grading 7.9 grams gold and 50.7 grams silver per tonne, with 0.8% copper, in hole 197.
The drilling follows up on earlier testing of D1 and Loma Larga, which intersected similar widths and grades to the recent drilling. That campaign included a hole (hole 168) through a high-grade area in D1 that intersected 28 metres grading 61.9 grams gold and 69.5 grams silver per tonne, plus 1.8% copper.
Iamgold owns a 100% interest in Quimsacocha, a 130-sq.-km property about 40 km southwest of Cuenca.
