Raising $1 million for memorial fund

In remembrance of the women killed at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal last December, The 1989 Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation is trying to raise $1 million for an endowment fund. The money will be used to establish scholarships and award programs for women pursuing studies in engineering. Only 3% of the practitioners in the profession are women, says Claudette MacKay-Lassonde, chairman of the foundation. The idea for the foundation arose last December after 14 women, 12 engineering students among them, were killed by a gunman at Ecole Polytechnique. Northern Telecom, Bell Canada, Honeywell, Imperial Oil, Molson, Xerox and other corporations have pledged their support.
